Resumen

The text describes the evolution of su
gar cane agriculture in Brazil in the 20th
century. At a first stage, the sector expe
rienced growth in terms of planted areas
and number of mills, but not in productivi
ty. There is a great difference between the
productivity of the producing regions, gi
ven that public policies did not stimulate
new technologies. The text emphasize that
the State Regulation structured a "rent
economy" and an "organizational iso
morphism" between the companies. After
the deregulation process, "isomorphism"
ceased to exist and new strategies and
new market competition arose.
